The American Revolution
Yale's HIST 116 traces the American Revolution as a transformation of identity as much as a war, following colonists as they became revolutionaries and then Americans. Lectures, recorded on campus in Spring 2010 for Open Yale Courses, cover the ideological ferment John Adams described happening in people's minds before Lexington, through the war itself, to the Constitutional settlement that followed. The course examines how a scattered set of British colonies became a confederation bound by common cause, looking at shifting loyalties, wartime mobilization, and the political arguments that shaped the new nation. Materials include full video lectures and a syllabus; the course is free to audit with no certificate offered.
