MIT's graduate course on using acoustics as a research tool in oceanography, taught jointly on campus and by simultaneous video link with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The course opens with a survey of current research questions in physical, geological, and biological oceanography, including climate, seafloor geology, and marine mammal behavior, then turns to the acoustic inverse problem, covering both linear and nonlinear inverse methods and how acoustic data combine with other measurements into integrated observing systems. The final section works through case studies drawn from current research journals, giving students practice applying the methods to real data. Materials available through MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes and reading assignments. No tuition or certificate fee applies since this is an open courseware release, though no formal credential is offered.
