MIT OpenCourseWare offers this engineering course on the driving forces behind electric current, fluid flow, and mass transport in biological systems. Lessons introduce mathematical and engineering tools for analyzing transport in tissues and across membranes, manipulation of cells and biomolecules, and microfluidics. The course also covers electrokinetic phenomena as a case study in coupled chemical, electrical, and mechanical forces. Materials include lecture notes, assignments, and exams drawn from MIT's Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science departments. The course is aimed at students with introductory physics and math background who want to apply engineering principles to physiological and cellular-scale problems. As with other MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, all materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
