An MIT OpenCourseWare graduate course on the models and optimization techniques airlines use to build and operate flight schedules. Topics include schedule design, fleet assignment, aircraft maintenance routing, crew scheduling, and passenger mix, along with more recent work on integrating these separate models and making them robust enough to recover from disruptions like weather delays. The course focuses on solution techniques built for large-scale, real-world problems rather than toy examples, and surveys state-of-the-art applications from the airline industry. Materials come from MIT's Civil and Environmental Engineering and Aeronautics and Astronautics departments and include lecture notes and assignments covering the mathematical formulations behind these scheduling problems. No enrollment or certificate is offered; the course is published as free self-study material through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license.
