A quantitative approach to managing large-scale water resources, covering river basin development, flood control, water supply, and groundwater remediation. Students build simulation models in MATLAB and solve numerical optimization problems using the GAMS optimization package, applying these tools to real planning and management scenarios for water infrastructure. The course from MIT OpenCourseWare includes lecture materials and problem sets that walk through constructing and analyzing these models, aimed at students who already have a quantitative engineering background. As with other MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, all materials are free to access, there are no graded assignments submitted for credit, and no certificate is issued, but the full set of course materials supports independent study of water systems engineering.
