Architecture Studio: Building in Landscapes
This MIT undergraduate design studio, the third in the architecture sequence, teaches students to design buildings that respond to a specific site's landscape and climate. Coursework centers on choosing a real site, analyzing its terrain, vegetation, light, and weather patterns, and translating that analysis into design decisions expressed through drawings and physical models. The studio format means instruction happens through iterative design exercises and critiques rather than lectures, building skills in reading a landscape and proposing structures that sit within it rather than against it. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, assignments, and studio project briefs used in the actual class. No certificate is offered, but all course materials are free to use under MIT's open license.
