MIT OpenCourseWare graduate course covering the numerical methods and parameterizations behind models of atmospheric and ocean circulation. Lectures work through a hierarchy of models, from simple geophysical fluid dynamics setups to full general circulation models (GCMs). Ocean GCM topics include parameterizing geostrophic eddies, mixing, and surface and bottom boundary layers. Atmospheric topics cover convection, large scale condensation, the planetary boundary layer, and radiative transfer. The course reviews widely used numerical schemes alongside emerging methods still being tested in research models. Materials include lecture notes and course readings published under MIT's open license, free to access with no enrollment required.
