MIT OpenCourseWare offers this Ocean Engineering course on designing sailing yachts from the hull up. Lectures follow the textbook Principles of Yacht Design by Larsson and Eliasson, covering hydrostatics, transverse stability, and how to work through the design spiral used by naval architects. Students use computer aided design software to shape hulls, appendages, and decks. The course culminates in a Final Design Project, where each student produces a complete sailing yacht design covering all major aspects of the vessel. Course materials include lecture notes, the design spiral framework, and project guidelines, though the referenced textbook figures shown in class are not reproduced on the site. Originally numbered 13.734 under the Department of Ocean Engineering, it was renumbered 2.996 in 2005 when ocean engineering moved into the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Free to audit through MIT OpenCourseWare with no certificate offered.
