MIT OpenCourseWare offers this short course on using antineutrino detection to study the Earth's deep interior. It covers the main heat producing elements, potassium, uranium and thorium, and asks where they sit in the planet and whether any exist in the core. Lectures explain how detecting antineutrinos generated by radioactive decay inside the Earth gives direct evidence about the sources of terrestrial heat, tests the Bulk Silicate Earth model, and checks alternative models of the core. The course draws on recent advances in antineutrino detector technology that make this kind of geological probing practical for the first time. Materials include lecture notes and course readings from MIT, free to access under an open license, useful for students of geophysics or particle physics who want to see how nuclear detection methods are applied to planetary science questions.
