Biological Chemistry II
Advanced biochemical mechanisms behind macromolecular machines get the focus here: the ribosome, the proteasome, fatty acid synthases as a model for polyketide and non-ribosomal polypeptide synthases, and polymerases. MIT's course examines the experimental methods researchers use to work out how these machines function inside the cell and how their activity is coordinated and regulated. Materials follow MIT OpenCourseWare's standard format of lecture notes, readings, and assignments drawn from the taught version of the class, letting students work through the same problem sets used on campus. The course assumes background in biochemistry and is pitched at students who already understand basic enzyme mechanisms and want to go deeper into structural and regulatory biology. As with all MIT OCW offerings, materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license and there is no certificate.
