The second semester of MIT's four-part introduction to modern standard Chinese (Mandarin), building on beginner-level speaking, reading, and writing skills. Class sessions center on performing memorized conversations, drills, question-and-answer exchanges, and communicative exercises on everyday topics such as daily routines and social situations. The course also weaves in discussion of Chinese culture and the sociolinguistic norms that shape appropriate language use, so students learn not just vocabulary and grammar but when and how to use them. By the end, students should have enough grasp of the language-learning process to keep progressing independently. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, assignments, and related resources used in the actual MIT classroom, though there are no video lectures. Free to access, with no certificate offered through OCW.
