Communicating in American Culture(s)
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this course for bilingual and multilingual students examining how American history, geography, institutions, and values have shaped mainstream Anglo-American communication norms and responses to major world events. Coursework moves from short writing and speaking exercises to longer, more formal projects, building analytical and communication skills in a scaffolded sequence. Materials include the syllabus, assignment prompts, and readings as posted on OCW, free to access under MIT's open license. The course treats communication as a cultural product, asking students to notice how American values and institutions shape what counts as clear or persuasive speech and writing, and to practice adapting their own voice within that framework.
