Computational Music Theory and Analysis
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this course on analyzing music symbolically with code. Students use Python and the MIT-built music21 toolkit to work through algorithms for music theory, score encoding, corpus studies, and musical search and similarity. Later sessions cover feature extraction and machine learning applied to scores, computational approaches to music generation, and models of music perception. The syllabus also addresses repertory access and computational bias in how corpora are built and studied. Materials include lecture notes, programming assignments, and readings drawn from published research in computational musicology, giving students a working sense of how symbolic music data gets modeled and mined. No certificate is offered, consistent with MIT OCW's open publication of course materials rather than a formal instructor-led enrollment.
