MIT OpenCourseWare offers this graduate-level course from the Department of Mechanical Engineering (originally Ocean Engineering course 13.853, later renumbered 2.068). It covers wave equations for fluid and visco-elastic media, wave-theory formulations of acoustic source radiation, and seismo-acoustic propagation in stratified ocean waveguides. Students work through Wavenumber Integration and Normal Mode methods for plane-stratified media, Seismo-Acoustic modeling of seabeds and ice covers, seismic interface and surface waves, and Parabolic Equation and Coupled Mode approaches for range-dependent waveguides. The course also treats numerical modeling of target scattering, reverberation clutter, and ocean ambient noise. Students build their own propagation models using the numerical approaches used in current acoustic research. Materials are provided free through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered, following MIT's standard OCW format of lecture notes and problem materials rather than graded assignments.
