MIT OpenCourseWare offers this course on cultural performances across Asia, covering both traditional and contemporary forms in genres such as theater, dance, and ritual. Students examine how performers, media, cultural settings, and audiences shape the meaning of a performance, and how globalization reshapes representations of cultural difference. Materials include video and audio recordings of performances, online resources, and readings, with live viewings incorporated when possible. No prerequisites are required and the course is taught in English. As with other MIT OCW offerings, the full syllabus, assignments, and readings are published online at no cost, though there is no certificate or instructor interaction since this is a self-study version of an MIT undergraduate course.
