Design of Medical Devices and Implants
MIT's course on engineering solutions for clinical problems through implants and medical devices covers cell-matrix control volumes, stress analysis in design, anatomic fit and sizing of implants, biomaterials selection, surgical instrumentation, and preclinical safety and efficacy testing including risk/benefit assessment and clinical trial design. Student projects draw from orthopedic devices, soft tissue implants, artificial organs, and dental implants. Materials come from MIT OpenCourseWare and include the full set of lecture topics and design project frameworks used in the original course, offered through MIT's Mechanical Engineering and Health Sciences and Technology programs. There is no certificate; materials are free to access and reuse under a Creative Commons license. The course targets advanced students already familiar with engineering fundamentals who want to apply them to real implant and device design problems.
