A survey of world economic history from MIT OpenCourseWare, aimed at economics students who want to widen the empirical range of their research using historical material and long-run data. The course draws on episodes from across the globe to illustrate the process of industrialization, with particular emphasis on labor markets and long-run economic growth. Materials include the syllabus, lecture topics, readings drawn from economic history scholarship, and problem sets used in the MIT classroom version of the course. The approach treats history as a testing ground for economic theory, asking how well models of growth, trade, and labor supply hold up against centuries of actual data. Free to access through MIT OpenCourseWare, with no certificate offered, this is a self-directed course best suited to students who already have grounding in economics and want to apply it historically.
