Environmental Engineering Masters of Engineering Project
A year-long capstone for MIT's Environmental Engineering Master of Engineering program, run alongside the Concepts of Engineering Practice seminar. Students work through real case studies using computer modeling tools and talks from industry practitioners, then turn a chosen case into a group project or individual thesis. Past projects tackled the MMR Superfund site on Cape Cod, wastewater treatment options for Brazil and Honduras, point-of-use water treatment and safe storage methods for Nepal and Ghana, Brownfields redevelopment in Providence, Rhode Island, water resource planning for Cyprus, and water supply for refugee settlements in Thailand. The course spans Fall and Spring terms and functions as the practical backbone of the degree, pairing technical coursework with fieldwork-style problem solving. Materials come from MIT OpenCourseWare and include the case study assignments and project structure used in the actual program, though this is graduate-level engineering work aimed at students already grounded in the field.
