MIT OpenCourseWare offers this advanced course on wavelets and multiresolution signal analysis. It covers wavelets as localized basis functions suited to representing short-time events, and builds up Mallat's pyramid algorithm, which filters and subsamples coefficients at each scale to connect wavelet theory to filter bank design. The curriculum develops multiscale algorithms used in compression and signal and image processing, with the subject taught through engineering and scientific projects rather than pure lecture. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and project assignments drawn from MIT's Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mathematics departments. There is no instructor interaction or certificate, but the full set of course materials is published freely under a Creative Commons license for self-study.
