A graduate-level MIT OpenCourseWare seminar on the research methods used to study identity politics. Building on the theoretical grounding of Ethnic Politics I, this course turns to how scholars actually study ethnicity empirically: how it gets defined and measured, what survey techniques capture or miss, and how researchers model ethnic identity and conflict in quantitative and qualitative work. The course examines conventional approaches in the field alongside major methodological challenges and critiques raised against them. Materials include the syllabus, readings list, and session-by-session topics as published by MIT OpenCourseWare, free to access with no enrollment required. It is aimed at political science graduate students already conducting or planning research on ethnic and identity politics, and assumes familiarity with the theoretical debates covered in the companion course.
