Ethnography
A practicum-style seminar from MIT OpenCourseWare that teaches the methods of anthropological fieldwork and writing. Students read ethnographies drawn from anthropology and science and technology studies, then design and carry out their own ethnographic projects in real settings such as laboratories, companies, or other local sites. The course balances close reading of published fieldwork with hands-on practice, asking students to observe, take field notes, and write up findings in the ethnographic tradition. Materials include the syllabus, readings list, and assignment guidelines as published by MIT's Anthropology program under Science, Technology, and Society. It suits students who already have some grounding in ethnographic reading and want structured practice turning observation into analysis and text, rather than a first introduction to the discipline.
