Fiction and Stories in Games
Clara Fernandez-Vara, of the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab, lectures on how narrative functions inside game design, part of MIT's CMS.608 Game Design course from Fall 2010. She covers why designers embed story elements into games, from plot and setting to character and open-ended player-driven narrative, and draws on readings including Jesper Juul's chapter on fiction in Half-Real and Soren Johnson's essay distinguishing theme from meaning. The talk works through examples of how games convey story through mechanics and context rather than cutscenes alone, though two copyrighted clips, a Soul Calibur 4 match and the Uplink trailer, have been removed from the posted recording. Lecture notes are provided alongside the video. The session sits within a broader design curriculum, treating fiction as one tool among several, such as mechanics and systems, that designers use to build engaging play experiences.
