Strategy, Skill, and Chance, Part 2
Philip B. Tan and Jason Begy continue MIT's CMS.608 Game Design course with a lecture on information flow and uncertainty in game systems. They work through how these concepts play out across a range of well-known games, including Scrabble, Go Fish, Mario Kart, Monopoly, chess, poker, War, and Settlers of Catan, comparing how hidden information, randomness, and skill shape each game's experience. The session then turns to feedback loops, examining how games reinforce or balance player advantage over time. The lecture runs just over an hour and pairs with chapters 7 and 8 of Brathwaite and Schreiber's Challenges for Game Designers, treating game mechanics as formal systems that can be analyzed and compared rather than just played. It is part of MIT OpenCourseWare's Fall 2010 Game Design series.
