MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning offers this practicum on applying sustainability principles to the Foshan, China riverfront. Students examine the underused Pearl River corridor running through the city's emerging downtown, working alongside consultants and planning teams already engaged by the city to revitalize its center. The course materials, hosted on MIT OpenCourseWare, include the syllabus, project briefs, and design assignments that guide students through site analysis and proposal development for the riverfront area. It treats planning and urban design as tools for improving quality of life and public activity along an underutilized waterway, giving students a real municipal case to work from rather than a hypothetical site. No certificate is offered; materials are free to use under MIT's open license.
