Gateway: Planning Action
MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning built this course for first-semester Master in City Planning students, using it to lay out the persistent debates and challenges that define the planning profession. Lectures and readings work through competing theoretical frameworks for understanding what planners actually do when they intervene in cities, from land use and housing to economic development and environmental policy. Case discussions and assigned readings push students to weigh different schools of planning thought against each other rather than adopt a single doctrine. The course also treats professional development directly, asking students to think concretely about how to use graduate school to build a career, including which skills and specializations to pursue.
