German Culture, Media, and Society
MIT's German Culture, Media, and Society examines current trends in German literary, theater, film, television, radio, and other media arts. The Fall 2006 offering focuses on German short film and radio art, including experimental radio plays, sound art, and audio installations. Students analyze media texts in terms of how they are produced, received, and distributed, and consider the public debates these works provoke. Particular attention goes to how German minorities are represented in mainstream media, contrasted with their own artistic work reflecting shifting identity and political voice. The course includes opportunities to discuss material directly with a visiting German writer, filmmaker, or media artist. Instruction and coursework are conducted entirely in German. Materials are provided through MIT OpenCourseWare at no cost, with no certificate offered.
