This MIT OpenCourseWare course prepares students to work and live in German-speaking countries, drawing on newspapers, journals, television, radio broadcasts, and web sources from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The focus is on current political, social, and cultural issues, with class time built around oral presentations, group discussions, guest lectures, and interviews with German speakers. Emphasis falls on professional-level speaking, writing, and reading skills rather than basic grammar review, so the course assumes existing German proficiency. Materials include the syllabus, assignments, and topic materials as published by MIT's Global Studies and Languages department. No listeners are permitted, reflecting its intensive, participation-based format. As with other MIT OCW offerings, the content is free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
