Indistinguishable From... Magic as Interface, Technology, and Tradition
MIT's Media Arts and Sciences program built this course around the idea that stage magic and modern interface design solve the same problem: making something feel impossible. Students study theatrical illusion, sleight of hand, and camouflage alongside machine learning and neuroscience, then build functional prototypes that apply those tricks to real technology, from game design mechanics to perceptual hacks that exploit how attention and expectation work. Course materials include the syllabus, weekly readings spanning magic history and cognitive science, and project briefs for the hands-on builds that anchor each unit. The class treats historical conjuring traditions as an engineering archive, asking what a 400-year-old card trick can teach a designer about camouflage or interface deception.
