International Women's Voices
This MIT literature course gathers contemporary women writers from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and North America, with a deliberate emphasis on non-western voices. Readings and in-class lectures trace how each author's work reflects a distinct cultural heritage, and the course asks whether a female voice can be identified that crosses those national boundaries. Discussion follows colonialism, religion, nation formation and language as forces shaping each writer, alongside the patterns of socialization women face in patriarchal societies. Students examine how fictional characters negotiate love, work, identity, sex roles, marriage and politics within these cultural frameworks. Materials include the syllabus, reading list and lecture notes distributed through MIT OpenCourseWare, free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
