MIT OpenCourseWare's introduction to the science and engineering behind exploring and monitoring the oceans. The course covers underwater acoustics, sound speed and refraction, sounds generated by ships and marine animals, and the principles behind sonar systems. It also treats hydrostatics and stability for ocean vehicle design, along with the instrumentation and electronics used in marine environments. Hands-on projects have students build and deploy sensor systems in the field, gathering real world data on ocean observatories. The materials include lecture notes, project assignments, and design exercises drawn from actual ocean monitoring work, geared toward students who want the engineering fundamentals behind ocean observation rather than a general science survey. As with other MIT OCW offerings, all materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
