Language Disorders in Children
A graduate seminar from MIT's Linguistics and Philosophy department examining how children acquire language and what happens when that process breaks down. Readings and discussion cover current linguistic theory alongside first language acquisition, building toward a principled account of language disorders at the phonological, morphological, and syntactic levels. The course asks how these disorders challenge existing theories of language and acquisition, treating clinical data as evidence that linguistic models must explain rather than as a separate applied topic. Materials consist of the MIT OpenCourseWare syllabus and reading list rather than recorded lectures, suited to students already familiar with linguistic theory who want to work through primary research on child language disorders.
