MIT's Edgerton Center offers this short course on conducting research interviews in unfamiliar field settings, such as when traveling abroad or working in a new cultural context. It teaches interviewing techniques grounded in Lean Research principles of rigor, relevance, respect, and right-size, moving from basic interview mechanics to best practices for planning questions, building rapport, and recording responses accurately in the field. The course assumes no prior interviewing experience and is structured as self-paced materials through MIT's Open Learning Library, including readings and exercises. Learners can either enroll to track progress or use all the materials freely without registering. There is no paid certificate track mentioned; the entire course, including materials and assessments, is free to access and complete.
