This MIT seminar looks at how the study of linguistics can teach young people about scientific inquiry and about the nature of language itself. Graduate participants worked directly with K-12 teachers to design pedagogical materials and classroom methods meant to make students curious about their native language and about language in general. Course materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, readings, and student-developed projects and lesson plans aimed at different grade levels. The seminar treats linguistics not as an abstract academic subject but as a tool for teaching reasoning and observation skills through everyday language data. Free to access online under MIT's open license, with no enrollment or certificate involved, this is a resource more for educators and linguistics students interested in curriculum design than a traditional lecture-based course.
