This MIT graduate architecture seminar helps students build a critical position on their own design work through the practice of portfolio-making. Students revisit existing projects to articulate a design thesis, then test different modes of representation, written text, printed layout, and web publishing, to see how each frames the work differently. Class discussion centers on questions like how to describe an image in words, how to theorize representation, and how writing and visual media can reinforce each other rather than compete. The course does not teach software or drafting technique; it treats the portfolio itself as a design problem, asking students to decide which medium best communicates a given project and why. Materials are provided through MIT OpenCourseWare, including the syllabus and assignment structure, free to access, with no certificate offered.
