Ship power and propulsion systems for commercial and naval vessels, taught at MIT. The course covers propulsor analysis, prime mover thermodynamic cycles including Rankine, Brayton, Diesel, and Combined cycles, propeller-engine matching, propeller selection, and waterjet analysis. It also examines reduction gears, integrated electric drive, battery operated vehicles, fuel cells, and alternative propulsors. A term project asks students to analyze propulsion plant design alternatives against given physical, performance, and economic constraints. Graduate students receive separate assignments and exams from undergraduates. Materials come from MIT OpenCourseWare and include lecture notes, assignments, and project guidelines, licensed under Creative Commons for free use and self-study, though this is an OCW archive without live instruction or a certificate.
