MIT OpenCourseWare offers this advanced electrical engineering course on the physics behind lasers and optoelectronic devices. Lectures cover Maxwell's electromagnetic waves, resonators and Gaussian beams, classical ray optics, and the quantum theory of light and matter, before turning to classical and quantum noise, laser dynamics, continuous wave and short pulse generation, and light modulation. Applications draw examples from integrated optics, semiconductor optoelectronics, and nonlinear optics. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams as published by MIT faculty, letting learners work through the derivations that connect quantum theory of radiation to real laser design.
