MIT OpenCourseWare offers this project-based course from the Sloan School of Management and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, built around a single cornerstone project where teams of management, engineering, and industrial design students conceive, design, and prototype a physical product. Class sessions run as workshops using cases and hands-on exercises rather than straight lectures. Topics covered include identifying customer needs, concept generation, product architecture, industrial design, and design-for-manufacturing. Materials include the syllabus, assignments, and project documentation as published on OCW, free to access under MIT's open license with no certificate offered. The course is aimed at students who want to practice the full arc of bringing a product from an early concept through a manufacturable design, working across disciplinary lines the way real product teams do.
