Media Technology and City Design and Development
MIT OpenCourseWare workshop examining how media technology and digital storytelling can support urban design and community development. Students engage directly with one neighborhood, Camfield Estates in Lower Roxbury, Massachusetts, a HUD Demonstration Disposition Project site regarded as a model of successful community organizing. The class introduces methods for representing places and residents, simulating change, and presenting future visions, then has students build a digital teaching tool that connects the untold stories of the residents who organized the community and the architects and planners who worked alongside them. Coursework includes readings, field engagement with real practitioners, and a digital storytelling project, with reflection on the relationship between professionals and the communities they serve. Materials are available free through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
