MIT's hands-on lab course introduces students to building, observing, and manipulating structures at the micro and nano scale. Coursework covers the underlying physics and engineering principles behind microfabrication techniques, including photolithography, thin-film deposition, and etching, alongside characterization tools like optical and electron microscopy. Students design and carry out laboratory projects that connect fabrication methods to real device applications, such as sensors or microelectromechanical systems. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include lab assignments, lecture notes, and project guidelines used in the original MIT class. The course is aimed at engineering students who want practical experience translating small-scale physical phenomena into working devices, with an emphasis on creative problem-solving in the lab rather than pure theory.
