Negotiation Skills: Negotiation Workshop
Mindy Garber leads a negotiation workshop for MIT's 15.393 Nuts and Bolts of New Ventures, part of the January 2025 IAP session. She covers core negotiation basics, including preparation, anchoring, and interest-based bargaining, before putting students through a live exercise built around a real MIT company formation problem. The session runs through how founders and early employees negotiate equity splits, roles, and terms when setting up a new venture, with students working the case in pairs or small groups and debriefing what worked. Garber ties the exercise back to practical stakes: how a founding team's first negotiation often sets the tone for every later disagreement about control and ownership. The lecture is aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs and functions as a hands-on complement to the course's broader curriculum on startup formation.
