Optical Engineering
MIT OpenCourseWare's Optical Engineering covers the theory and practice of optical methods in engineering and system design, with emphasis on diffraction, statistical optics, holography, and imaging. The course builds the methodology needed to incorporate optical components into systems used in precision engineering and metrology, bio-imaging, and computing applications such as sensors, data storage, and communication in multi-processor systems. Materials include lecture notes, experimental demonstrations, and a design project that lets students apply the theory to a real optical system. Offered through MIT's Mechanical Engineering and Media Arts and Sciences departments, the course is aimed at advanced students who already have a background in wave optics. As with other MIT OCW offerings, all materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
