MIT's School of Architecture offers this studio course on photography as a critical and technical practice. Students work through black and white darkroom techniques, film exposure, development, and printing alongside digital imaging and camera fundamentals, building toward a self-directed term project. The syllabus mixes practical instruction with readings, lectures, field trips, visiting artist talks, and group critiques, examining how photographic images are produced and constructed within culture, with particular attention to the relationship between space and the photographic image. The course is open to both beginning and advanced students, though enrollment favors Master of Architecture candidates. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus and assignment structure. A lab fee applies to hands-on materials, but the course content itself is free to study, published under MIT's open license.
