Physics of Rock Climbing
MIT's Experimental Study Group seminar SP.255 applies physics and engineering thinking to problems in the rock climbing community. Sessions combine lectures, discussions, and a small research project: participants are introduced to unsolved questions climbers face, such as rope dynamics, anchor forces, or friction on holds, and then work to answer a small piece of one of them. The course builds engineering problem-solving skills and communication practice rather than climbing technique, and no climbing or mountaineering experience is required or taught. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus and project guidelines. It is a compact, hands-on introduction to how physical principles show up in an everyday sport, aimed at students curious about applying mechanics to a real-world activity rather than at climbers looking for coaching.
