MIT's 1.011 Project Evaluation covers methods for assessing large-scale, long-lived civil engineering projects that carry economic, financial, social and environmental stakes. Students learn engineering economics techniques including net present value analysis, life-cycle costing, and benefit-cost analysis, with particular attention to handling uncertainty in long-term forecasts. Case examples span transportation systems, urban development, energy and environmental projects, water resource management, and telecommunications, drawing on both historical and contemporary programs from public and private sectors. As an MIT OpenCourseWare offering, the course includes lecture notes, assignments, and readings free for self-study, licensed under Creative Commons. There is no instructor interaction or certificate, but the full set of course materials as taught at MIT is available for independent learners to work through at their own pace.
