Science Writing and New Media: Explorations in Communicating about Science & Technology
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this writing-intensive course on communicating science and technology to general audiences. Students work through reading and writing assignments covering principles of good prose alongside conventions specific to scientific and technical writing, such as clarity, structure, and handling of evidence. The course also looks at new media, including blogs and online platforms, as emerging channels for science communication, weighing how format changes what a writer can do. Materials include the syllabus, assignment sequence, and readings drawn from published science journalism and technical writing guides. There is no instructor video component; the course is text and assignment based, structured around practice and revision rather than lecture. As with other MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, all materials are free to access and there is no certificate.
