Software Engineering Concepts
MIT OpenCourseWare's Software Engineering Concepts is a reading and discussion course on the practice of building software systems and running development projects. It surveys what has worked and failed historically across topics such as the software lifecycle, requirements and specifications, design principles, testing and formal analysis, quality management and metrics, use of commercial off-the-shelf components and reuse, software evolution and maintenance, team and people management, and how programming languages affect engineering practice. Rather than lectures, the course centers on assigned readings and structured discussion of case studies and research papers, asking students to weigh competing approaches to real project problems. Materials are provided free through MIT OpenCourseWare, including the syllabus and reading list; there is no certificate. The course targets students who already have some programming or systems background and want a grounded look at the discipline behind large software projects.
