Marci Shore, Associate Professor of History at Yale University, guest lectures in Timothy Snyder's Yale course on Ukrainian history, focusing on the 2013-2014 Maidan uprising and the personal breaking points that drove Ukrainians into revolution. Drawing on her book Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution, Shore examines what it means for a nation to exist as both structure and action, and why Ukraine's national identity has been so contested among Polish, Russian, and Jewish self-understandings. She connects the Maidan protests to deeper questions about Soviet and Nazi terror in Ukraine, the country most devastated by both regimes, and asks whether Ukraine's post-colonial, multilingual character is a relic or a model.
