The Space Between Workshop
MIT's architecture workshop asks designers to treat space with the same attention they normally give to objects. Coursework runs through a series of design projects and precedent studies that reverse the usual process, starting from the gaps, voids, and in-between zones of a building rather than from its forms. Students examine how spatial relationships shape a design before any object is drawn, testing the idea that space carries as much design weight as the walls and furniture that define it. Materials include project briefs and case studies drawn from built and studied precedents, following MIT's open courseware format. The workshop suits students already comfortable with basic architectural design who want to rework their process rather than learn fundamentals from scratch.
