This MIT OpenCourseWare course covers advanced market and mechanism design, examining how existing institutions work and whether they can be redesigned for better outcomes. Topics include mechanism design, auction theory, one-sided matching such as house allocation, two-sided matching, stochastic matching mechanisms, student assignment, and school choice. Materials include lecture notes, readings, and problem sets drawn from research literature in economics and game theory, aimed at students who already have a background in game theory basics. The course treats matching and allocation as engineering problems, asking what rules produce stable, efficient, or fair assignments in settings from housing to school seats. No certificate is offered, but all course materials are freely downloadable through MIT OCW under a Creative Commons license.
