MIT OpenCourseWare offers this graduate-level mechanical engineering course on turbulent flows, focused on engineering methods for predicting and modeling turbulence. Topics include the governing equations for momentum, energy, and species transfer, the production, dissipation, and scaling laws of turbulence, and Reynolds averaged equations for momentum, energy, and species transfer. The course covers simple closure approaches for free and bounded turbulent shear flows, with applications to jets, pipe and channel flows, boundary layers, buoyant plumes and thermals, and Taylor dispersion, including heat and species transport. It closes with an introduction to more advanced closure schemes such as k-epsilon models and statistical methods in turbulence. Materials are provided as open MIT course content, free to access, with no certificate offered through OCW.
